Over the last few weeks, I've been doing business planning with my agents at my brokerage. And a common question I get is, should I hire a coach? Hey, my name is Chance Brown. I'm the broker owner of CB&A Realtors, and I make video content for real estate agents because I'm passionate about helping them build great businesses. Part of that might be hiring a coach. So, when I get asked by an agent, should I hire a coach? More often than not, my answer is absolutely you should. But, and then we need to talk about a few things. I am a huge believer in coaching for a number of reasons. A good coaching experience should be one that picks you up, moves you forward, shares experiences from the other people that they coach, but also and most importantly holds you accountable to your own [ __ ] If that part isn't happening, it's not going to be successful in the long term.

All the excuses that you come up with to not do your job, all the things that you say aren't going to work in your market or with your clients or whatever it is, they've got to be able to push through that and get you to try new things. Because here's the deal, we believe the things we do based off of experiences we've had in the past. Without creating new experiences, we can't change new beliefs. Without changing our beliefs, we can't try new things that are going to push us outside of our comfort zone and out of our boundaries to a place where we grow. And that's where the magic of a great coach helps. Now, not everybody needs coaching for the same things. Some people are better at accountability for themselves than others. Some people are more self-aware. Some people need the basics where some people need to do all kinds of different things. So, if you're going to hire a coach, which again I recommend, you need to have a really good idea before you talk to anybody of what you want that coach to do for you. Then, when you go talking to coaching companies, talk to them about the things that are in your plan. Don't let them talk at you with their plan. Because if all of their stuff is great, and I'm sure it is, but it doesn't fit what you're looking for, it won't matter because you're not going to do it. So, make sure that things align with what you're trying to do. And then the last thing, and I cannot I just can't stress this more. The coaching relationship is so important. Yes, you need your coach to push you forward.

Yes, you need your coach to hold your feet to the fire. Yes, you need your coach to share things that other people in their coaching universe are doing so that you are getting all kinds of new great ideas. You need your coach to have systems and processes and marketing and all the things. But if you don't connect with your coach on a personal level, I [clears throat] just I've seen it too often where when people don't, even if that coach is a great coach, it doesn't last because either they don't feel like they've got somebody whose best interests are aligned with theirs or there's a lack of trust. And it may not be this big explicit lack of trust, but it's a lack of trust when it comes down to the fundamentals. My coach and I both have been very, very vulnerable in front of each other. We have shared things going on in our personal lives. He has helped me be a better father. He's helped me be a better spouse. All of these things and I've been there for him during times when he was going through stuff. If you don't have that part of the relationship down, I think that it long-term hurts the coaching piece of it, too, because I know without a question of a doubt that my coach has my best interest in mind. He's not just there punching a clock. He's not just there checking a list that he's done a couple of calls with me this month. He is as big a part of this brokerage as anybody else and has been since the beginning. And so I can't stress enough all the fundamental stuff for real estate is great, but if you don't have a great personal relationship with your coach, and you should know that relatively quickly, you probably need to hit eject and find someone else. Those are my things that I tell people when it comes to hiring a coach. Should you hire a coach? Probably. Most people need one.
