Welcome back to Top 5. My name is Chance Brown and I'm going to be your host for today. If this is your first time joining us on Top 5, typically what you see is you see me interviewing a thought leader, a business leader, a top producer in the real estate industry, and they're sharing five best practices that you can put in your business. Today, we're doing something a little different and this is day five of a single topic each day of the week on a overriding subject. So we're trying something a little bit new. This week, we are talking about getting back to basics after the last couple of years of kind of a crazy real estate market where we've been all over the place doing all kinds of things. Our hair has been on fire, as you can see, if you're watching, mine went completely away.
And we are working on getting back to some of the basics that are going to help us continue to grow and build our business, despite whatever the market does, good or bad. So, Monday, we talked about awareness and we specifically talked about the daily disciplines that have to happen in your business and being aware of what those are and how long they take, building out a weekly schedule based on those things. On Tuesday, we talked about transparency, and that's taking that schedule and are we actually executing on it? Are we actually doing the things that we're doing? Are we getting up and going to work every day? And are we working a full work day? Also, during that time, are we investing our time in revenue generating activity? And what does that look like? And what do the results of that look like based on the time that we invest? If I spend 20 minutes making phone calls versus an hour, one would think that the hour would be more productive.
So, Wednesday, we talked about focus. We know the things we need to do. We're actually doing them. Are they paying off? Where is our business coming from? And how do we focus our time, effort, and energy on the places that are going to give us the greatest return on our investment? Typically, that looks a lot like your referral basis. It looks like your sphere of influence. It looks like your past clients. And that was yesterday. We talked about really trying to take that next level by doing two things. Number one, training our referrers on how to and why it's important to refer. And number two, tracking activity with them to make sure that once a month, we're doing something with all of our best referrers, but that we're not neglecting the rest of our database because of that.
Today, we're going to talk about accountability. Accountability is often looked at in life as sort of a negative. And I want to turn that on its head and try to make a positive out of it. When we're training new agents here at our brokerage, one of the things that we talk about with them, very, very frankly, is the accountability of the activities that they need to be doing to build a business. And we don't do it from a, I'm a police officer, and I'm checking your numbers, and I'm doing all of these things because I want to catch you not doing it. We talk to them about it from the standpoint of that we have invested a significant amount of time and effort into ensuring their success, that we want to make sure they're not going to fail. And the way that we make sure that they're not going to fail is by inspecting what we expect on a fair and consistent basis throughout their time in that training program.
And by doing so, what we find is, this is where we need to help this agent grow more. So, accountability. Accountability is really, really simple, but it takes a lot of discipline. So, what we tend to see is people hire coaches. And you look at the coaching environment, and listen, I'm a huge proponent of coaching. I've had a coach for most of my professional life as a Realtor, and I push people to coaching all the time. I get asked about it all the time. I love coaching. But if you really, really think about coaching from the standpoint of what it does, the main thing that coaching does is hold people accountable to the things that they need to be doing. I have to have, as an entrepreneur, somebody to answer to that isn't my wife, that isn't me looking back at myself in the mirror, that it's going to help me make sure I'm doing the things that I need to do.
And so, I hire a coach. Yeah, there's great best practices sharing. There's great nationwide networking opportunities. There's all these different things. But the truth of the matter is, I'm hoping that I have somebody there that's going to hold my feet to the fire in order for me to grow my business. And that's the accountability piece. So, there are some things that you can do. We already talked about tracking our time, and that's going to give you that transparency and that awareness. That's going to help. Getting an accountability partner, a friend in the industry, even if they're not in your market, who cares where they are? You need somebody who's going to say, okay, what are you doing today? Great. Let's touch base tomorrow. And it's a five-minute phone call in the morning. You don't go to the gym by yourself because you're not going to stick with it.
You go to your gym with a trainer or you go to the gym with a buddy because you can hold each other accountable. My wife started walking with a neighbor. She was walking really inconsistently. And now that she has her neighbor going with her in the mornings, they go almost every morning. And she can tell a difference because she's doing that exercise. It's good for her mindset for the day. It's good for her exercise level. All of that. This is the kind of thing I'm talking about. Having an accountability partner that isn't somebody who loves you and wants to just placate you. But if somebody is really going to hold you accountable for the things that you need to do, that's a really simple entry into it. Maybe the next thing is sort of a group coaching or group accountability, whatever that looks like. That may be it.
Maybe it's you need to go out and hire a coach because you have, as you look at these five basics, maybe you don't have the things in place that you need to have in place. But one of the big ones is accountability. Whatever that looks like. Hey, put it on social media. Create a vision board and put it on social media. Set your goals out there on social media. Give updates. Email it to your sphere. Email it. Get people involved in it. It doesn't really matter how you do it. What matters is that you're doing it and it's not something that, oh, I listened to this podcast and it was great and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And I did something for a week and then I stopped doing it because life happened or this or that happened. No, have somebody there that when you get to work in the morning, you know that you've got to answer to that person for the things that you're supposed to do that day.
And that is, for most Realtors, something that's difficult to do on your own. So find that friend, spend five minutes on the morning, just in the morning, just getting, hey, this is what I did yesterday. I wasn't able to do this because of a client showing that happened or mess with a transaction or whatever. I'm going to do it today. Plus, I'm going to do these three things. And then the next day, same thing, same thing. And just make it a habit. Make it one of those daily disciplines that we talked about on Monday. Start your day with accountability. Start your day with accountability because you care about your business. You care about yourself. You care about your success. You care about your goals. And you care about them so damn much that you're not going to let yourself fail. You're not going to let yourself down.
You're not going to let your why down. You're not going to let your kids, your family, whatever it is that is the motivating factor for the reason you do this business. You're not going to let them down because you care too damn much about it. That's why we hold ourselves accountable. That's why we need somebody to help us with that. And so I'm going to encourage you as you get back to the basics, all the things that I've talked about this week, all five of them really come down to execution at the end of the day. Are you disciplined enough to focus your efforts into the execution on these five things? And if you are, you're going to be successful. If you're not, then probably the piece of the puzzle that is missing nine times out of 10 when we look at this is the accountability.
If that's you, if that's resonating with you, if it's easy for you to put off the hard things because the easy things are easy and the hard things we push off to the next day. We don't do it today. We do it another day, whatever that looks like, man, find somebody who's going to hold you accountable to the hard things that's going to help you grow your business along with these other four basics that we've talked about. Hey, I hope that you have liked this format. We may bring it back depending on the feedback that we get instead of doing all five in one show and making a 45 minute to an hour long episode. Just make a bunch of, you know, five to 10 minute episodes that cover a subject over the course of a week. We hope that you enjoyed it. We will be back soon with another episode of Top 5. Thank you for tuning in. Take care.
