Keeping Up With Change

Chance BrownChance Brown··2 min read

From the archive. I first wrote this in March 2014 on my old blog. Some of the tools, names, and numbers have changed since, but most of it holds up.

I could probably sum this post up in two words, you can't. But, while clever, it wouldn't make for much of a blog post, would it?

So, here's the deal, you could literally spend all day every day keeping up with the changes in the real estate industry. Think about it. Legislation at the local, state, and national level, technology, services, systems and ancillary industries like mortgage and title all affect our world, and that's the tip of the iceberg. When I say you could spend all day on this stuff, it isn't an exaggeration.

So, what's a regular agent to do when it comes to keeping up?

First of all, don't chase trends. Evaluate things that catch your eye and see if it fits you, your style, and your business goals. If not, move on. You don't have to sign up for every single new tech tool out there.

Second, read. Most associations at the local and state level send out newsletters. NAR does. Read the hot points and investigate further if something catches your eye. Read the headlines on the big news syndicators like Inman and RISMedia. Block time in your schedule for professional development and invest that time in staying as up-to-date as you can.

Third, get involved. At the very least, go to your office meetings. Your Broker should be updating you on really important things. Serve on a board at your association. Go to networking events or join a WCR chapter. Be out there in the industry and you will learn by osmosis.

Finally, be a follower. I wrote a piece on this earlier this year. Find the really smart people around you and either hang out with them or follow them on their blogs, social media, or both. I mean, look at you reading this awesome blog! By following 10 or so influential people, you can learn a lot in a short time.

So, like I said, you can't keep up with it all without going crazy or not doing any business. So, streamline the process as much as you can and be aware of what is happening around you in the business. That'll keep you up to date on 90% off what's out there.
